Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseev was hospitalized after being shot in Moscow on Monday, Reuters and TASS reported, citing Russia's Investigative Committee.
Alekseev is the first deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. When the head of the Russian mercenary group "Wagner" Yevgeny Prigozhin organized a short-lived uprising in June 2023, Alekseev was one of the senior representatives sent to negotiate with him, Reuters said.
Several high-ranking Russian military officers have been targeted in assassination attempts since the start of the war in Ukraine, for which Moscow blames Kiev.
