Most European countries have provided in their constitutions that elections are not held during war, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas told journalists today before the start of the meeting of European defense ministers in Brussels, BTA reports.
When there is an attack from outside, elections cannot be held, all efforts are directed towards defense, she added regarding reports that Ukraine is preparing for elections for a new president. Elections during war are not a good solution, Kallas commented. There may be hope for peace, but I do not see any efforts from the Russian side in this direction, she pointed out.
Kalas announced that work on approving additional sanctions against Russia continues, but so far no agreement has been reached on all the proposals of the European Commission. She thanked the MEPs who today supported the provision of a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine and called for flexibility in the use of the funds.
According to her, today the EU ministers will discuss the European contribution to the guarantees of peace in Ukraine. Kalas explained that Ukraine will be able to acquire weapons from any sources with the borrowed funds, if it cannot produce them itself or if they are not available on the European market.
