US Vice President JD Vance said that Washington is more interested in a nuclear deal with Iran than in overthrowing the leadership in Tehran, DPA reports.
"If the Iranian people want to overthrow the regime, it is up to the Iranian people", Vance told journalists traveling with him to the Azerbaijani capital Baku.
The focus of US President Donald Trump's administration is currently on ensuring that "the Iranians do not have nuclear weapons", he said.
Trump was considering sending another aircraft carrier to the region the day before, according to an Axios report earlier.
"We have a fleet that is on the way, and another one may followed it," he said, according to the site.
Vance said Trump was still working to reach a deal with Iran, saying: "What we're focused on right now is that Iran can't have a nuclear weapon."
Trump still has all his options open to him, Vance stressed, referring to the U.S. military.
On Friday, representatives from Tehran and Washington began new talks in Oman, which is mediating the conflict.
