Energy addiction! The EU has slightly reduced its imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia - 1

The European Union imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia worth about 7.4 billion euros ($8.78 billion) last year, a drop of about 3 percent compared to 2024, Eurostat data cited by DPA show, BTA writes.

In total, the EU imported liquefied natural gas worth approximately 46 billion euros in 2025, with the United States remaining the largest supplier - with about 24.2 billion euros.

Although the European Union introduced a broad ban on imports of fossil fuels such as oil and coal after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine in 2022, there were no such sanctions on gas for a long time, as some countries were too dependent on Russian supplies.

Liquefied gas continues to arrive in the EU via the TurkStream gas pipeline in the Community.

A complete ban on imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia is planned from 2027 as part of a sanctions package against Moscow adopted in October.

The regulation also provides for a “safeguard clause“, which allows the European Commission to authorize affected member states to temporarily lift the bans in the event of a serious threat to energy security, DPA recalls.
