The Secret Service said that agency officers shot and killed an armed man in his 20s after he tried to illegally penetrate the secure perimeter of President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, world agencies reported, BTA reported.
Although Trump often spends weekends at his residence in Florida, today he is at the White House. First lady Melania is also in Washington.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the man who was shot. According to the Secret Service, he was “seen near the north entrance of Mar-a-Lago and appeared to be carrying a shotgun and a gas can“. He was shot by Secret Service agents and a local police officer, the agency added.
This is not the first threat to Trump's life, the Associated Press notes. He was wounded in an assassination attempt during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024.
On September 15, 2024, a man with a rifle was captured after standing near Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach while the president was playing. He was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the AP notes.
