Belgium says it will not provide military support to the US and Israel against Iran - 1

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken ruled out the possibility of the country providing military support to Israel and the US in their war against Iran, the Belgian news agency Belga reported, quoted by BTA.

In front of deputies from the relevant committee in the Belgian parliament, Francken explained that Belgium could provide military support in the Middle East, but had not yet received an official such request.

He specified that Belgium would be ready to act if it received a request from countries such as Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, since such military support would be "in accordance with international law". Support for such countries, he said, would be justified because these countries have been attacked by Iran. As a member of the European Union, Belgium also has an obligation to help Cyprus.

However, Franken clearly distinguished such assistance from the current military campaign by the US and Israel, which he described as "contradictory to international law". "Therefore, there will be no participation in these operations", the Belgian minister said.

He reiterated his country's support for the system of international law. "Although the system does not always function effectively in practice, Belgium has a strong interest in its observance as a small EU member state," Franken stressed.

According to him, the US-Israeli attacks violate international law, even if they are "justified for reasons of global security".
