A senior Cuban government official said that the country's political system, as well as President Miguel Diaz-Canel's term, are not up for negotiation with the United States, Reuters reported, citing the United States.
"I can categorically confirm... that Cuba's political system is not up for negotiation with the United States, and that of course applies to the president, as well as to the position of any public official," Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cosio said at a press conference.
Last week, the Cuban president said that representatives from Havana and Washington had discussed ways to overcome differences between the two countries. Later in the "New York Times" spread the information that, according to American officials familiar with the negotiations, the Donald Trump administration wants to remove Diaz-Canel, whose term as president and leader of the Cuban Communist Party expires in two years.
