Peace in the Middle East? Mojtaba Khamenei gives his blessing to a deal with the US - 1

Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has agreed to start talks with the United States and seek a potential deal, Al Arabiya reported.

This signals a possible opening of diplomatic ties amid the ongoing conflict.

The development comes after US President Donald Trump said that Washington and Tehran had held talks over the past day that had led to "major points of agreement".

Yesterday, the US leader announced that discussions began on Sunday and are expected to continue, raising the possibility of a short-term agreement to end the war. He announced his decision to postpone airstrikes on Iranian power plants by five days amid recent "productive talks" between the two countries, adding that his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law and close aide Jared Kushner had been involved in the talks with Iranian officials.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has told Witkoff that Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has given him his "consent and blessing" to agree to a deal with Washington if Tehran's conditions on its nuclear status are met.

According to people familiar with the matter, the message was conveyed during Araghchi's recent secret call with Witkoff and Kushner. Araghchi previously claimed that his last contact with Witkoff was before the US and Israel launched a military campaign against Iran.

Against this backdrop, it is claimed that Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey will mediate in the new round of talks between Washington and Tehran.
