Volodymyr Zelensky: Peace in Ukraine has become hostage to the war in Iran - 1

Negotiations to end the war in Ukraine have been suspended due to the conflict over Iran, which has attracted the attention of the United States and the rest of the world. This was stated today by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with Bloomberg, Focus reports.

According to him, Kiev has not received any new signals about a possible resumption of negotiations either from Russia or the United States.

''American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are also still considering the possibility of visiting Kiev,'' said Zelensky.

''I think it all depends on how the situation in the Middle East develops,'' believes the Ukrainian president.

Zelensky also noted that he had not received any official or unofficial proposals for a temporary ceasefire on May 9.

We recall that yesterday Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation in which they discussed a possible ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev for 9 May.

Zelensky added that today he instructed his diplomats to contact the United States for details.

The Ukrainian president also noted that Ukraine commemorates the memory of those who died in World War II on May 8. According to him, it remains unclear what conditions Putin has in mind for a ceasefire on May 9 for the Victory Day parade.

''They want the parade to pass peacefully for a few hours, and then the attacks to resume. We do not want any ceasefire to turn into a tactical deception by the Russian Federation, Zelensky is categorical.

He stressed that he supports ceasefire initiatives that help protect the civilian population and facilitate the exchange of prisoners.

''We always respond positively to genuine proposals for a ceasefire with Russia, if there are any,'' he added.

Temporary ceasefires

In April, the first temporary ceasefire of the year was announced between Ukraine and Russia on the occasion of Easter, which, however, did not lead to a real cessation of hostilities.
