Goodbye, Gazprom! Moldova urgently buys American liquefied natural gas - 1

The state energy company of Moldova - "Energocom" (Energocom), announced that today and tomorrow it will carry out for the first time test deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) originating in the USA to its customers, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The Moldovan company announced in a statement that it will purchase LNG from the Greek floating terminal off Alexandroupolis in cooperation with the Athens-controlled state company "DEPA Commercial" (DEPA Commercial).

Moldova relied almost entirely on Russian gas supplies under a deal with Russian giant Gazprom, but stepped up efforts to diversify after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"On Monday and Tuesday we will buy 14,000 megawatt hours of natural gas each day from the port of Alexandroupolis. A total of about 28,000 megawatt-hours, which is equivalent to 2.6 million cubic meters of gas," said Victor Binzar, Acting Director of "Energocom".

The company is already testing the import route from Greece, buying small quantities of gas in 2023.

Moldova does not currently receive gas from Russia, but Moldova's separatist region of Transnistria relies on Russian supplies.

The total amount of gas that Moldova aims to supply is just over 3 billion cubic meters per year.
