Fierce battle for the White House! Joe Biden and Donald Trump are running side by side in Americans' preferences - 1

American President Joe Biden and his rival from the Republican Party Donald Trump are tied in the contested race for the presidential elections in November, according to the results of a Reuters/Ipsos poll, writes BTA.

Trump is currently the subject of several criminal prosecutions, and Biden is under fire for his support for Israel in the Gaza war.

About 40 percent of registered voters who took part in the eight-day survey that ended yesterday said they would vote for Biden if the election were held today. The share of respondents who say they will vote for Trump is the same.

Biden had a one percentage point lead over Trump in the previous Reuters/Ipsos poll taken on April 29 and 30.

Nearly 20% of respondents in the latest survey said they had not yet decided who they would vote for and were inclined to support one of the third-party nominations or not vote at all.

Support for Robert Kennedy Jr., who opposes vaccines and is running as an independent candidate, stands at 13%. This represents a 5% increase from the previous survey in April, when 8% of respondents said they would vote for him.

Both front-runners suffer significant negatives.

In recent months, Trump has spent a lot of time in a Manhattan courtroom in connection with one of four criminal cases pending against him. The suit in New York alleges that before the 2016 presidential election, Trump paid the porn actress to not go public with her claims that she had an intimate relationship with him a decade earlier.

The results of previous Reuters/Ipsos polls show that most Americans consider the allegations against Trump to be serious. He pleaded “not guilty“ and denied having any such wrongdoings.

The other cases against Trump relate to his attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, as well as the illegal storage of classified documents after he left the White House.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to any of the charges.

Negatives suffered by Biden, 81, include concerns about his advanced age, as well as sharp criticism of his support for Israel in the Gaza war from some Democrats.

In recent weeks, a number of American universities have been rocked by protests, which have heightened concerns among Democrats that some young voters will turn against Biden.

The latest poll shows that the positions of Biden and Trump are leveling off. Among registered voters who were not given the option to express support for a third-party candidate or say they were unsure who to choose, Biden and Trump were tied at 46% each.

Respondents who refuse to answer the question posed in this way amount to 8%.

Biden has a slim 3% lead among registered voters who say they strongly believe they will vote in November.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online among 3,208 registered voters nationwide.
