Thousands rallied in the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Friday against the controversial law against non-governmental organizations, reports AFP.

The "Foreign Influence" of the ruling party "Georgian Dream" is directed against non-governmental organizations or NGOs and media that receive funding from abroad. This sparked a month of massive street demonstrations in Tbilisi and drew condemnation from Europe and the United States.

Opponents say the law mirrors Russian legislation used to silence dissent and risks destroying the Black Sea nation's chance for EU membership.

"Georgian Dream" criticized the United States for "encroachment" on Georgian sovereignty after Washington announced a plan to impose visa restrictions on Georgian officials because of the legislation.

Since April 9, there have been almost daily rallies against the law.

Georgian lawmakers passed the law last week, but it was later vetoed by President Salome Zurabishvili, who is at odds with the government.

Parliament's press office told AFP that a committee on legal affairs would discuss overriding the veto on Monday, formally launching the procedure that could lead to the measure's entry into force.

Voting in the plenary hall is scheduled for Tuesday, the press center announced.

"Georgian Dream" has enough MPs to override the veto, and Zurabishvili admitted that her attempt to block the legislation has only a "symbolic" strength.
