The new leader of the British Reform Party (Reform UK, formerly Brexit Party) Nigel Farage was doused with a soft drink today at the opening of his election campaign for the nationwide parliamentary vote on July 4, Reuters reported. The agency defines the former MEP as a "thorn in the heel" of the ruling Conservative Party, writes BTA.
Farage yesterday caused the biggest shock in the election campaign so far by announcing that he is leading the Reform Party in the campaign and running for parliament, Reuters said. The agency described it as a significant blow to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose Tories are trailing Labor significantly in opinion polls.
Farage is best known for his role in the so-called Brexit - the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union in 2016, with his political activism forcing a number of Tory prime ministers to take tougher stances on immigrants in the UK.
On leaving the pub "Moon and Starfish" in the English seaside resort town of Clacton, Essex, Farage was hit with a cardboard soft drink cup by a woman, video footage on social networks showed.
Reform Party chairman Richard Tice called the attacker a “childish idiot”, saying his party would not be shaken by the incident, which would only help it win hundreds of thousands more votes. Local police said they arrested a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of the attack.
