The Paris prosecutor's office said today that it has opened a preliminary investigation procedure into suspicions of illegal financing of the leader's election campaign of the far-right party “National Assembly” Marine Le Pen in the presidential election in 2022, which was won by Emmanuel Macron, reported Reuters, quoted by bTA.
The investigation, which began on July 2, followed last year's report by the National Campaign Accounts and Political Finance Commission, which scrutinized the expenses and financing of election candidates, the prosecutor's office said.
Allegations of embezzlement, forgery, fraud, as well as an allegation that a member of the electoral list accepted a loan will be investigated.
Le Pen and her party have previously denied campaign finance wrongdoing. PP “National Assembly“ did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
