An eighteen-year-old youth died after being struck by lightning on the highest mountain in Germany, DPA reported. Several people were injured after strong storms across the country, BTA reported.
According to the police, the young man from the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia went to Germany's highest peak, Zugspitze, together with two other people.
Yesterday, the group went to the summit, located 80 meters from the lift station, but on the way back, the tourists were struck by several lightning bolts. The young man was fatally injured, and the others received help from the emergency services, the media reported.
The storm has complicated rescue operations for the mountaineers. The rescue helicopter was unable to take off due to weather conditions, and the "Zugspitze" railway line was also out of service.
Meanwhile, a family of six was injured yesterday by lightning in a park in the northern German town of Delmenhorst, west of Bremen. Two people are in critical condition, a police spokeswoman said. The family - one adult and five children - were sitting under a tree in Graftwiesen Park when they were struck by lightning. They were all taken to hospital.
