The German government has decided to hold the next parliamentary election for 28 September 2025, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
The date set by the cabinet must be approved by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, but this is usually a formality.
The last Bundestag election took place in 2021, when Chancellor Olaf Scholz's German Social Democratic Party won the most votes. He formed a coalition government with “Union 90“/“Greens“ and the Free Democratic Party.
In the course of its rule, the center-left coalition, which was expected to face difficulties from the beginning, has lost a large part of its supporters and currently the results of the polls give a decisive lead to the conservative opposition.
Scholz announced today at a press conference that he intends to fight for a second chancellor term.
