A South African court has given 42 life sentences to a man convicted of 90 rapes, mostly of children, in a case that shook the country after the arrest his in 2021, reported France Press.

The sentence for Nkosinathi Fakati, who was already jailed in 2022, was read out in a hearing broadcast live on South Africa's main news channels.

According to the judge in the case, he waited for his victims on their way to school, some of whom were in school uniforms.

When he sat in the dock, the 40-year-old man's face was hidden by a medical mask.

Some of the victims let the accused into their homes because he pretended to be a gardener, plumber or clerk, the judge recalled.

In addition to the 90 rapes, he was convicted of coercion, 43 kidnappings, two assaults and four robberies.

The Republic of South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world. According to police data, 9,309 rapes took place between April and June 2024. Women's rights advocates also criticize the government for not doing enough to address violence against women.
