Optimism in Europe! Ukraine peace talks to begin this winter - 1

Peace talks on the war in Ukraine could probably start this winter, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, quoted by "Reuters".

He outlined a series of planned meetings as Warsaw seeks to play a leading role in ending the conflict.

Poland has been one of Kiev's staunchest supporters since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in 2022. Tusk assured that Warsaw will be heavily involved in all negotiations when he takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union on January 1.

"I will hold a series of talks, primarily affecting the situation beyond our eastern border," he noted at a government meeting.

"As you can imagine, our delegation will be co-responsible for, among other things, what the political calendar will look like, perhaps what the situation will be during the negotiations that may, although there is still a question mark , to start in the winter of this year".

Tusk said French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Warsaw on Thursday to review talks with US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris last weekend.

He indicated that he was in constant contact with Warsaw's Scandinavian and Baltic allies and that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would visit Warsaw in the first days of Poland's EU presidency.

"I really want Poland to be the country that will not only be present, but also set the tone for these decisions that should bring us security and guarantee Polish interests," Tusk insisted.

Yesterday, Zelensky presented arguments for a diplomatic solution to the war. His latest speech suggests Kiev's growing openness to negotiations. However, he said he told Trump and Macron that he did not believe Putin wanted to end the war.

Earlier today, the Kremlin announced that the war will continue until the goals set by Putin are achieved through military action or negotiations.
