Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has resigned. He made an official statement at the government building, BTA reported.
The prime minister said he was stepping down after two students were attacked on the street in Novi Sad by unknown individuals at 3:24 a.m. local time last night.
Miloš Vučević is the chairman of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party after President Aleksandar Vučić declined to run for office again in 2020.
"I think that the policy I follow, the policy of the party I lead, should show the highest degree of responsibility in our society. "And that's why, after what happened tonight in Novi Sad, I have decided to resign as Prime Minister," Vucevic said.
He added that he had spoken to President Vucic about his resignation that night. Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric will also resign later today, Serbian media reported.
