US President Donald Trump has said that he will impose 100% tariffs on films produced in foreign countries, the BBC reports.
Trump said that he was authorizing the US Trade Representative to start the process because the American film industry is dying "very quickly".
He blamed other countries for this because they offer incentives to attract directors and studios, which is "a threat to national security".
"This is, above all else, a message and propaganda!", Trump said on his Truth Social platform. "WE WANT AMERICAN-MADE MOVIES BACK!"
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has slapped tariffs on countries around the world.
He claims the tariffs will boost American manufacturers and protect jobs, but the result is a global economy in shambles and commodity prices are expected to rise worldwide.
Before taking office, Trump appointed three movie stars - Jon Voight, Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone - as special ambassadors tasked with promoting business opportunities in Hollywood, which he described as "a great but very troubled place.".
"They will serve as special envoys to me with the goal of bringing Hollywood, which has lost a lot of business overseas over the past four years, BACK - BIGGER, BETTER AND STRONGER "EVERYWHERE!" Trump wrote at the time.
