All member states of the European Union must increase their defense spending to overcome existing gaps in the bloc's capabilities and ensure long-term support for Ukraine, said the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, quoted by "Reuters".
"Only in this way can we gradually fill the gaps in our capabilities and collectively support Ukraine," Merz stressed, calling for coordinated action in the field of European defense.
The visit to France is the conservative leader's first foreign trip since taking office as chancellor. It marked his aspiration for a "new beginning for Europe" based on a strengthened Franco-German partnership. After Paris, Merz will also visit Poland — another key ally of Berlin.
The two leaders stressed that a united and strong Europe is crucial for the stability and security of the continent, especially against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and the need for sustained efforts in support of Kiev.
