A German citizen has been arrested after stealing his own car, DPA reported, BTA reported.

"At the moment it seems very likely that we have two victims", said a police spokesman in the western city of Dortmund.

The BMW of the 27-year-old man from the southwestern city of Mannheim was stolen while he was visiting relatives in Romania in April. He reported the theft to the police and his insurance company.

Weeks later, the car was purchased in Germany by a 38-year-old man from Dortmund.

The 27-year-old then used location services to track his car in Dortmund - but instead of reporting it to the police, he went to the city last week, unlocked the car with his own key and returned to Mannheim.

On Thursday, the older man reported his new car stolen. Police used location data to locate the car in Mannheim and arrested the 27-year-old that evening.

Investigators were surprised when the man presented police with documents confirming that he had bought the car himself in the UK several years ago.

Both men were able to explain "convincingly" how they came to own the car, the spokesman said.

The car was manufactured in 2017 and is worth 12,000 euros. It was seized by police, who are trying to clarify its ownership.

Authorities are still searching for the original thieves in Romania, while it is also being determined whether the 27-year-old should be tried for stealing his own car.
