The administration of President Donald Trump is pressuring Serbia and other Balkan countries to accept migrants deported by the US, Bloomberg News reported today, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
The requests to countries in the region are part of a broader US strategy to find foreign governments willing to accept deported migrants, Bloomberg said, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Reuters notes that it has not yet been able to verify this information. The White House, the U.S. State Department and the Serbian Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to revoke the temporary legal status of hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan, Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan migrants living in the United States, supporting the Republican president's plans to speed up deportations.
The Trump administration is looking at possible destinations for immigrants who could be deported as a result of the decision, Bloomberg reported.
