Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have launched an investigation into the actions taken by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom during the protests and riots that swept the region last week, Newsweek reports.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and Rep. Clay Higgins have sent letters of indictment to Newsom, Bass, and the Justice Department.

„Newsom and Bass have condemned President Trump's measures to curb the violence carried out by rioters in Los Angeles, resorting to unfounded accusations against him regarding the actions of the rioters“, writes Newsweek, citing the text of the letters.

Comer ordered the two to provide all documents about the contacts between them and with the police regarding the protests and riots.

On June 7, the immigration service conducted a large-scale operation to detain illegal immigrants in Los Angeles. Then the White House, without the consent of local authorities, sent the National Guard to the city. California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump, the Pentagon and Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett for violating federal law and the constitution. The court temporarily banned the president from deploying the National Guard in Los Angeles.
