Ukraine has received significantly more aid from Europe in recent weeks than at the beginning of the fourth-year Russian invasion, DPA reported, citing a study by the German Institute for World Economics in Kiel (IfW), BTA reported.

According to data published today, military, financial and humanitarian aid from Europe amounted to a total of about 20.2 billion euros in March and April. By comparison, in January and February it was about 6.7 billion euros.

According to the researchers, the US has not provided any aid since February.

“It is remarkable that Europe has filled the gap“, said the project leader Christoph Trebesch. “It remains to be seen whether this is a temporary boost or the beginning of a more permanent shift in Europe's role as Ukraine's main supporter,“ he added.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Ukraine received the most financial and military support from the United States in the early stages of the war during the term of Democratic President Joe Biden, DPA notes.

In early March, the new administration of Republican Donald Trump temporarily suspended American military aid to Ukraine to conduct an audit and said the president's focus was on peace.

European leaders have pledged to do more for Kiev, as they fear that Ukraine's defenses may not hold up without additional support. However, the increase in support has not been evenly distributed, DPA notes. Countries like the UK and Northern European countries have significantly increased aid, while others, like Germany, have maintained more moderate levels.
