European Commission faces no-confidence vote in European Parliament - 1

The European Commission (EC), led by President Ursula von der Leyen, is facing a no-confidence vote in the European Parliament, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

European Parliament President Roberta Mezzola informed parliamentary group leaders this evening about the vote tabled by Romanian right-wing MEP Gheorghe Piperea.

In the petitioner's reasons, the EC is accused of a lack of transparency and mismanagement, especially in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The vote must be supported by at least one tenth of MEPs, or 72 people, in order to be tabled for discussion and voting at the plenary session in Strasbourg next week.

If passed, the vote of no confidence would require the resignation of the entire European Commission, including its president and all 26 commissioners.

Such a scenario is not considered likely, as it would require a two-thirds majority among the 720 members of the European Parliament.
