Former Serbian trade minister Tomislav Momirovic, who resigned after the Novi Sad tragedy last year, was arrested in a raid by the police and the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime, the Serbian edition of "Euronews" reported, BTA reported.

Momirovic resigned on November 20 after the canopy at the Novi Sad railway station collapsed on November 1, killing 16 people. In the period 2020-2022, when the station was being renovated, he was the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.

A warrant for the re-arrest has also been issued for former Construction Minister Goran Vesic, who also resigned after the tragedy, but stated that he does not feel guilty about the incident. He was arrested at the end of November last year and charged with a serious crime against public security in connection with the crime of causing public danger. Vesic was released from custody and allowed to defend himself at large. He is currently in hospital after emergency abdominal surgery.

Pro-government media claim that this is a "massive attempt to strike the state by the prosecutor's office on orders from the West," writes the Belgrade-based Beta agency. Earlier today, it was reported that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, which some media outlets reported was related to the new arrest warrants.
