The temperatures are like in North Africa, the publication notes, adding that at the peak of the heat in late July, +43.4 degrees were measured in the shade, just nine tenths below the absolute record registered in the city 18 years ago. “It felt like 48“, locals share, BTA reported.
In four of the last five years, summer temperatures in Calafat have not dropped below 40 degrees. In 2022, it was the hottest in the city neighboring Bulgaria, according to data from the National Meteorological Service.
Experts have an explanation - the region is the warmest in the country, because it has a significant Mediterranean influence. Another factor that affects the climate is the sandy-clay soil, which heats up to 60 degrees in summer.
Today, however, the residents of Calafat are enjoying coolness and unusually low temperatures for the season. At 1 p.m. local (and Bulgarian) time, the mercury in the thermometers showed 24 degrees. Precipitation is also expected by the end of the day.
The danger of storms and hail is in force today for 19 counties of Romania. The weather will be unstable in Botosani, Suceava, Bacău, Vrancea, Covasna, Harghita, Brașov, Mureș, Bistrica-Nasăud, Sibiu, Alba, Cluj, Salaș, Hunedoara, Caraș-Severin, Gorj, Mehedinți, Dolj and Vâlcea. It is possible that wind gusts there will reach 70 km/h.
A yellow code for dangerous heat is in force for 14 other counties of the country and for the capital Bucharest. The warning applies to Vrancea, Galati, Braila, Buzau, Prahova, Dambovita, Arges, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Constanta, Ialomița, Calarasi, Ilfov. In these areas, the temperature-humidity index is expected to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units, and the maximum temperature to be around 37 degrees.
