In the last week, an average of 90 fires per day have been registered in Kosovo, a significant increase compared to the beginning of August, when the number was around 60. This was announced by the Director of the Emergency Management Agency, Genc Metaj, quoted by the Koha publication, BTA reports.
“We had very serious fires in several suburban villages, but also in mountainous areas, where the fire spread very quickly. It threatened human lives and caused serious damage, including burning down houses“, Metaj said in an interview with RTK television.
According to him, a large part of the fires were started intentionally. “The potential risk of spreading fires is very high due to the high temperatures and the presence of dry and easily flammable material. "However, temperatures are not the only cause, many of the fires are the result of deliberate arson, related to business activities or even farmers burning agricultural land to facilitate their work," he stressed.
