Born in Stara Zagora in 1933, he built a remarkable career as a civil engineer in the US, while maintaining his passion for classical music and Bulgarian culture.

Popov was a widely respected specialist in the field of structural and geotechnical engineering. Among his most significant projects are the work on the Second Avenue subway in New York, the Sony Center in Berlin, the Torre Mayor in Mexico City, and the stabilization of Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. For the latter achievement, he received a Hero's Medal from the City of New York.

Popov's professional path began in Bulgaria, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering. In the 1970s, he worked in Cuba on the construction of suspension bridges, and in 1976 he emigrated with his family to the United States. In 1982, he joined Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers in New York, where he worked for almost three decades.
